Born: August 10, 1977
Graduated from Purdue University in 2000
Growing up,
I was a swimmer (following my older sister's footsteps), but became a
runner also in High School. My swim coach encouraged my friend,
Dan Peairs and I to try some triathlons. After our freshman year,
we did one and were hooked. That was 15 years ago. I was
going to run at Purdue, but saw a racing shell for crew, and decided
that looked cool. It was. 4 years of rowing improved not
only my physical conditioning (I was the youngest male qualifier to the
1998 Hawaii Ironman while on crew), but made my mind stronger as
well. We were a very successful crew. After I graduated, I
took to racing until I found a job. My plan was to balance my
life 50/50 with a pilot career and a triathlon career. 9/11
ruined both for a while. Three years ago, I took up triathlons
seriously again. My sister urged me to keep flying, but put 100%
of my free time into racing. I could use my travel benefits to
race more often and in distant places, even if I still had to sacrifice
some training to work. I followed her advice and have been very
happy since.
Two years
ago,
my company was reducing their pilot force. After 8 years of
employment, I took a voluntary furlough. Tina and I moved to
Colorado since we needed a change of scenery (we love Chicago, but the
winter/spring could be better for training!). I am focusing on
off road triathlons and XTERRA races now. Living at the base of
Beaver Creek Ski area helps me with my mountain training immensely.
